BIG NEWS – after an 18-year absence, AutoCAD is returning to the Mac! Of course, much to Autodesk’s dismay, this hasn’t exactly been a secret to nearly anyone following who follows the CAD industry. Now for the part I hadn’t expected (but makes perfect sense); AutoCAD is also coming to the iOS (aka. iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad).

As I make presentations about AutoCAD throughout the year, some of the most common questions that come up have to deal with optimizing AutoCAD; the software is slow to start, the software is very sluggish when I try to draw, and the list goes on. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for issues like these, something I’ve found to help more times than not is updating the Autodesk Certified Hardware Database. In some extreme cases I’ve actually seen this solution take an AutoCAD installation that ran so slow and unstable it was absolutely useless, and make it usable once again.
Modern releases of AutoCAD have become much more dependent on your machines graphics card and the underlying drivers. In a nutshell, the Autodesk Certified Hardware Database matches the capabilities of your machines hardware to the capabilities of AutoCAD.

Getting ready to go off to college (or know someone who is)? Autodesk is taking its free Autodesk Homestyler product that’s simple enough to use, even students from [insert name of college that (in your certainly unbiased opinion) have the dumbest students] can figure it out to the dorms. Just yesterday the Autodesk Dorm Design Contest was announced. The essence of the contest is this, design your dream dorm room using the free cloud-based Autodesk Homestyler product and win up-to a $500 back-to-school shopping spree at Target.

As a cloud-based product, all you need to run Autodesk Homestyler is an internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc). Using Autodesk Homestyler you can draw/design your space in 3D, and then complete the design by adding flooring, furniture, appliances, even landscaping if you’re so inclined from a library of real products.
Even if you’re not a student (and thus not eligible for this competition) I do encourage you to at least check out Homestyler. While it’s no replacement for Autodesk’s desktop applications, it’s still a very capable application (especially considering its price).

Several years ago I stumbled upon this concept of “mind mapping”. Frankly I really didn’t see the point of mind mapping when I first discovered it. After all it reminded me of those brainstorming maps my English teacher made me create in the 3rd grade. Not exactly the type of thing you expect someone in a business setting to create. Nonetheless, I started using it for managing simple tasks, which compounded into more complex tasks, and before I knew it I was mapping everything from major business projects to my packing list for vacation.

Launched in March of 2009, the AutoCAD Exchange has proven itself as an excellent destination for all things AutoCAD. In case you haven’t checked it out, the site is free to check out and join. Once there you’ll have access to a long list of FREE resources such as tutorial videos, access to classes from Autodesk University, and more. One of the most popular elements of the AutoCAD Exchange is their Ask the Expert series.
Each week the site features a different AutoCAD Expert. During the week you (members of the AutoCAD community) are able to ask that expert anything from how do I change the background color in AutoCAD to their take on a certain procedures and/or trends in the industry. With my book and Autodesk Official Training Guide AutoCAD 2011 and AutoCAD LT 2011: No Experience Required just hitting stores, I’m excited to have accepted Autodesk’s invitation to be the AutoCAD Expert this week on the AutoCAD Exchange.
